Senior Training Directors' Forum

Knowledge Capture and Transfer
Panel

September 26, 2007

Note:  Senior Training Directors' Forums are targeted for training and development professionals who have a minimum of 10 years of training and development (or equivalent) experience and are responsible for developing training and development strategy. Director level professionals are also responsible for decision making in their organizations. These programs are designed to offer strategic insight and time for round table interaction with peers.

Overview

Knowledge is a key source of competitive advantage in the business world, but it's not easy to create and leverage it in practice. Deep knowledge and expertise—whether it resides in managers, knowledge workers, or traditional skills and crafts people—comprises up to 70% of the value of many American companies. This asset is about to undergo a massive assault. Many companies will lose up to half of their knowledge workers in the next 5 years, while in the public sector the attrition rate will be even higher. At the same time, loyalty to employers is fading and knowledge is walking out the door with Gen Xers who regularly jumping ship for the next best thing. Organizations may never again experience the continuity of long-term stable workforce members who are invested for 20 to 25 years.

How do companies capture this soon-to-be-retired and transient knowledge? How can organizations proactively identify essential institutional knowledge or skilled-job knowledge and engage in planned knowledge transfer?

Our panel of presenters will lead you in exploring the challenges and range of solutions in answering these questions. From their multiple perspectives of large global enterprise to public sector organization, they will discuss:

  • How you capture the kind of dynamic "knowing" that makes a difference in how people do their work
  • How you recognize and nurture a community of practice
  • How a distributed global community collaborates on best practices
  • How skills that keep a company in business get transferred electronically
  • How you select and encourage the use of appropriate technology for sharing knowledge
