Managing Training
November 8-9, 2007

Overview

This program is designed to provide an overview of the skills needed to move from being a training practitioner to managing training in an organization. It is intended for experienced trainers who are new to the management role or who are interested in moving into a training management position.

Topics will include:

  • Identifying key management skills
  • Developing an organizational perspective
  • Managing training projects
  • Building a training team

The course will consist of four 1/2 day sessions (15 contact hours).

Course Outline

November 8
8:30 am- Noon

Moving from Training to Managing

  • Identify key critical competencies and attributes for managing versus training
  • Explore how to leverage those skills for use in management of people and projects
  • Identify C-level communication skills (CEO, CFO, CTO, etc…)
  • Build a familiarity with strategic planning for a training department
  • Discuss aligning an organization's training function with the company's mission and structure
  • Familiarize participants with the budgetary process

This session targets the Learning Strategist competency of the National ASTD Competency model.

Project Management and Action Planning

  • Discuss key competencies required to efficiently manage training projects
  • Introduce and explore key aspects of project management including framing the project, identifying tasks and milestones, and building a schedule
  • Explore selecting, leading and assigning responsibilities to a project team
  • Examine preparing reports and implementing course corrections to keep a project on task
  • Identify and select resources, both external and internal
  • Build familiarity with key project management tools and resources

This session targets the Project Management competency of the National ASTD Competency model.

Linking Training to Organization Performance

  • Define performance improvement and training and the activities that comprise each
  • Recognize and work with the organizational dynamics and culture of a company
  • Survey the organizational culture in terms of learning and performance improvement
  • Become a business partner rather than a cost center
  • Determine return on investment (ROI) in the applicable terms for one’s company

This session targets the Business Partner competency of the National ASTD Competency model.

Developing and Managing a Training Team

  • Discuss designing a training team to meet organizational needs and utilize available resources
  • Identify team structure – multiple trainers or a training department of one
  • Identify skills needed to work with subject matter experts
  • Identify and evaluate leadership skills and styles
  • Identify team building strategies including hiring, coaching and team development
  • Practice coaching and feedback skills

This session targets the Professional Specialist competency of the National ASTD COmpetency model.

Refunds Refunds are allowed if a written cancellation is received in the ASTD office no later than 3 days before the event and we have someone available to take your spot. No refunds are given after the event.
Credit To obtain the one hour of credit, you must register for all four sessions and then add $50 to that cost. The course number for credit for ASTD chapter members is TBA and for others is TBA.

To receive credit, you must attend the entire two days and be prepared to do a paper as determined by the lead instructor. Students taking the course for graduate credit must take the course for a letter grade and must achieve at least a "B" grade in order to the credit to be transferable into the graduate program.

This course is an elective for the PSU Training Certification program.

NOTE: Each session is designed to build on the last one. This means that the entire course is intended to be taken by one person, not split between 2 or more individuals. Full registrations will be accepted for 1 person only.
