Managing the Training Function
Overview
The Cascadia Chapter presents a new and exciting two-day workshop designed to
provide the skills needed to move from being a training practitioner to managing the training function in your organization. Topics will include identifying key management skills, developing an organizational perspective, implementing project management, and building a training team.
This course is designed for:
- Experienced trainers who are new to the management role or interested in moving into a training management position.
This course is NOT designed for:
- Those new to the training field

Moving from Training to Managing
Alice Willmarth
- Identify key critical competencies and attributes for managing versus training
- Leverage skills for use in management of people and projects
- Identify C-level communication skills (CEO, CFO, CTO, etc…)
- Implement strategic planning (mission statement, vision) for your department
- Align an organization's training function with the company's mission and structure
- Familiarize participants with the budgetary process

Linking Training to Organization Performance

- Define “Performance Improvement” and “Training” and activities that comprise each
- Recognize and work with the organizational dynamics and culture of your company
- Survey the organizational culture in terms of learning and performance improvement
- Market your services internally for maximum performance improvement
- Become a business partner rather than a cost center
- Determine Return on Investment in the most applicable terms for your company

Project Management and Action Planning

- Discuss key competencies required to efficiently manage training projects
- Introduce and explore key aspects of project management including framing the project, identifying tasks and milestones, and building a schedule
- Select, lead, and assign responsibilities to a project team
- Prepare reports and implements course corrections to keep a project on task
- Select and work with vendors
- Build familiarity with key project management tools and resources

the entire course is intended to be taken by one person, not split between 2
