Demystifying Evaluations
Intended Audience
Learning professionals, typically with 3-5 years of experience, who want to take their evaluation efforts beyond "smile sheets" and post-tests. Also for those with more experience who want to refresh and update their knowledge.
Note: Those who register will be asked to complete a brief questionnaire in advance of the session.
Overview
This session focuses on Kirkpatrick's Four Levels of Evaluation and moving training evaluation beyond level one and level two evaluations. Local seasoned ASTD members Larry Ferguson, Susan Zabriskie and Rob Dodson will serve as the panelist for this interactive presentation.
This session looks at traditional and contemporary models of evaluation
and equips participants with a roadmap for conducting higher level
evaluations. Participants will have an opportunity to share obstacles
they may have encountered and gain insights into how these can be
overcome. Local seasoned ASTD members Larry Ferguson, Susan Zabriskie
and Rob Dodson will serve as panelists for this interactive
presentation.
Participants will Gain
- A fresh perspective on evaluation as it relates to the brave new world
of training and performance improvement.
- A framework for understanding evaluation, from Kirkpatrick's model
forward, and a roadmap for conducting higher level evaluation.
Insights into obstacles that can block higher level evaluation and
strategies for overcoming them.

Larry Ferguson

Larry owns and manages Compass Consulting Group (a division of Larry Ferguson & Associate, Inc.). His firm's "sweet spot" focuses on partnering with senior managers who are struggling to find cost-effective solutions for developing managers and leaders. Depending upon the situation and desired outcomes, his firm applies a variety of assessment and evaluation tools to measure pre-defined outcomes from the Kirkpatrick and Phillips' models. Larry has been an active Board member of the ASTD, Cascadia Chapter. He served as the 2004 President. He is also an active member of Tabor Toastmasters, serving as its President from 2006 to 2008. In 2006, he completed an intensive Jack Phillips' course on developing and implementing ROI in training settings. As part of his on-going commitment to the profession, he also teaches a six-week course on “Group Process and Development,” at PSU’s Professional Development Center.
Susan Zabriskie

Susan Zabriskie is the owner of PerformanceWorks LLC, a Portland-based performance consulting firm. As a Performance Consultant, Susan assists organizations by identifying root causes of performance gaps and developing and evaluating effective interventions to close those gaps. With more than 20 years experience as a trainer/facilitator she has created, delivered and evaluated large-scale training programs at municipal, government and corporate levels. Throughout her career she has built dozens of assessment and evaluation tools and trained university faculty in assessing online learning. She is currently an adjunct faculty member in the Communication Studies Dept. at Marylhurst University where she teaches the course Assessment and Evaluation for Trainers. Susan has served on the Board of Directors of the Cascadia Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development, and is an active member of the National Speakers Association and International Society for Performance Improvement. She holds a master’s degree in Instructional Systems from the University of Central Florida.
Rob Dodson
VPR Consulting
Rob Dodson is a training and organization development professional with more than 20 years of business experience in the medical, chemical, computer, and banking industries. Rob started and directed the Six Sigma program for Boston Scientific, a Fortune 500 medical device manufacturing company, before relocating to Portland with his family in 2007 and establishing his own firm, VPR Consulting. VPR Consulting helps clients sustain success by aligning workplace practices with core values. As both a practitioner and manager of training, Rob has extensive experience applying the ADDIE cycle and is a strong proponent of rigorous training evaluation. His articles on training and OD subjects have been published in Training and Development and HR Magazine.
