Joint ASTD and ODN Program!
When Training is Not the Solution: NonTraining Interventions
Dan Vetter
Recently, training professionals have been challenged to expand our roles from “trainers” to “Performance Consultants.” In the 1990’s ASTD National launched the Human Performance Improvement (HPI) certificate program and began teaching a five course curriculum on this new skill set.
However, many of us still fall into the trap of applying training Band-Aids as our solution even when other performance interventions are probably more appropriate. Perhaps the old adage applies: When all you have is a hammer, everything you see looks like a nail. If training is the only tool in our arsenal, no wonder we so frequently return to it as the solution.
Expand your horizons and build your network at this joint ASTD / ODN program. You’ll learn to use a Human Performance Model to explain the essentials to improve organizational performance; and then explore more than 30 non-training interventions that might be useful to close performance gaps. You’ll meet and hear first-hand from other consultants skilled in using many of these non-training tools for organizational performance improvement.
Click here for a copy of the list of HPI interventions. Please note that items 12- 16 are considered "training" interventions and will NOT be covered in this presentation.
While this program does not aim to make you an expert in any of these possible interventions, it does promise to give you a broad awareness of the many options available and some of the resources you may wish to call upon in order to address future organizational performance issues.

Dan Vetter, who is a long-time member of both ASTD and ODN, will facilitate this program. Dan’s personal mission is to make people (including businesses and organizations) successful. He humorously refers to himself as the Organizational Chiropractor, because he seeks to eliminate the pain organizations experience from misalignment.
Dan was a pilot trainer for ASTD National’s Human Performance Improvement (HPI) Certification Program in the mid 1990’s, and has since lead numerous training programs for professional trainer/consultants on Performance Consulting. He uses these skills and tools in his consulting work with a variety of clients.
Dan brings his 25 year background in training, quality, process improvement, and OD to this topic, along with excellent facilitation skills that promise to make this program engaging and worthwhile.
