Program Description

Portland Program
July 18, 2007

Emotional Intelligence and Diversity:
Strategy and Skills for Training Professionals
Lee Gardenswartz and Jorge Cherbosque

“Cultural competence requires that organizations have a defined set of values and principles, and demonstrate behaviors, attitudes, policies and structures that enable them to work effectively cross-culturally; have the capacity to value diversity, conduct self-assessment, manage the dynamics of difference, acquire and institutionalize cultural knowledge and adapt to diversity and the cultural contexts of the communities they serve; incorporate the above in all aspects of policy making, administration, practice, service delivery and involve systematically consumers, key stakeholders and communities.”
- - -Georgetown University, National Center for Cultural Competence

Emotional Intelligence is widely acknowledged as a critical component of interpersonal and professional effectiveness. Additional dimensions of Emotional Intelligence are required to bridge the complex differences that exist between human beings in pluralistic work environments. This session presents a new paradigm of the critical intersection of Emotional Intelligence and Diversity and gives training professionals a methodology and sample processes to help clients develop competence in the four aspects of Emotional Intelligence and Diversity. In so doing, clients can understand and leverage the power of emotions to increase personal satisfaction and professional effectiveness.

Objectives:

  • Gain an understanding of the role of Emotional Intelligence as an aspect of personal empowerment and effectiveness
  • Learn about a model and methodology for developing EID in others
  • Assess your own EID competencies
  • Experience sample activities for developing awareness and skills in dealing with emotions triggered by differences
