Training on a Shoestring
with Shelly Dodge, Scott Lechert and Jenny Sherman
May 14, 2009
Note: The Learning Directors' Forum (formerly Senior Forum) is targeted for training and development professionals
who have a minimum of 10 years of training and development (or equivalent) experience and are
responsible for developing training and development strategy. Director level
professionals are also responsible for decision making in their
organizations. These programs are designed to offer strategic insight
and time for round table interaction with peers.
Overview
Anyone who has read any newspaper lately can see that no matter what the business or profession, everyone is being asked to do much, much more with much, much less. Although learning professionals have faced this situation many times before, today’s environment seems as if it will not be quickly fixed.
This Learning Directors’ Forum will provide insight into how four different companies with four different challenges have confronted this reality. The panel of learning professionals will share their experiences on how they approached “shoestring training” and will discuss the “how to” that you can take back to work and implement immediately no matter what the economy because their solutions are inexpensive but also effective – something that you would want to do no matter what the economic environment.
The panel will include:
1. Angie Cuthill from Standard Insurance. Angie will share an Assessment Center approach to training that is simple, effective and inexpensive.
2. Shelly Dodge from Nike. Shelly will share her experiences with Intercultural Communication & Training
3. Scott Lechert from PacificCorp. Scott will share ways to approach eLearning that are effective and on a shoestring.
4. Jenny Sherman from Portland State University. Jenny will share how she has approached leadership development without a budget.
During their presentation and discussion they will cover:
- learning need/opportunity
- budget situation
- solutions they designed, developed and delivered
- obstacles and pitfalls they encountered
- results of the training
- learnings from the work – what they would do differently, how would they approach things differently, etc.

For most of the past nine years, he has found myself under tight budget constraints and has learned to be very resourceful regardless of those constraints.
