Senior Training Directors Program

Leveraging "Lessons Learned":
A Case Study in Organizational Effectiveness
with Karl Hunrick, Bonneville Power Administration

November 20, 2003

Note:  Senior Training Director Initiative sessions are targeted for training and development professionals who have a minimum of 10 years of training and development (or equivalent) experience and are responsible for developing training and development strategy. Director level professionals are also responsible for decision making in their organizations. These programs are designed to offer strategic insight and time for round table interaction with peers.

Overview

An old adage states, there’s no foresight, like 20/20 hindsight. Does your organization have a process for using lessons learned as part of their organizational development? Are you and your organization ready to ask the hard questions in order to move forward? And are you and your training team ready to lead the way in implementing the way forward?

There’s no doubt, we’re navigating through tough economic times and nobody know that more than organizations in the power industry. Over the last 12 months, BPA has found that tough times call for asking tough questions in order to learn valuable lessons to help set the future course. This ASTD Senior Initiative Case Study will give participants the opportunity to understand BPA’s process as well as share their own learning and experiences about lessons learned within their own organizations. After attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Define the key questions BPA asked at the start of the ‘lessons learned’ project and translate it into key questions for their own organizations.
  • Explain the process BPA used to answer the questions and formulate future strategy as a result and what role training plays in the future strategy.
  • State BPA’s process for implementing lessons learned and tracking results.
  • Share your own experiences about lessons learned and learn from your peers.
  • Begin to develop your own model for lessons learned.
