with Panel

June 24, 2004

Note:  Senior Training Director Initiative sessions are targeted for training and development professionals who have a minimum of 10 years of training and development (or equivalent) experience and are responsible for developing training and development strategy. Director level professionals are also responsible for decision making in their organizations. These programs are designed to offer strategic insight and time for round table interaction with peers.

Overview

  • What is an LMS (Learning Management System)?
  • How do I go about selecting one?
  • What should I look for?
  • What should I be sure to ask before I buy?
  • Once I’ve bought one, how do I go about implementing it?

Learning Management Systems are becoming a popular and effective way to track employee education, scores, post courses, etc. Buying and implementing one is no easy task. Learn from several companies that have been through the process so that your quest can be that much smoother.

Speakers

Kathy Milhauser
Training Consultant, Global Footwear Training & Development, Nike, Beaverton, OR

www.nike.com

Kathy has a long history at Nike, working in the Information Technology and Training functions. As part of the effort to provide a global learning environment and reporting infrastructure for the Footwear Division, Kathy began to pursue an LMS solution for the Division in early 2003. Because Nike had three LMS systems in use at the time, Footwear chose to implement GeoLearning as an affordable and easy to implement solution. Nike is now embarking on an enterprise-wide LMS implementation of PeopleSoft ELM, which will bring all of the disparate LMS solutions together over the next 2 to 3 years.

Jan Foster
Account Executive, Planet Productions, Portland, OR

www.planetproductions.com

Jan has worked in the software development industry for the past six years after a long sales career with Xerox. For the past two years, she has consulted with Planet’s clients to understand their needs for developing and deploying custom e-learning programs. Many of those programs have been launched on the client’s LMS. Planet builds courses according to industry standards so they can be easily ported to an LMS in the future. In some cases, Planet has built administrative systems to satisfy client’s needs for reporting and record keeping before the adoption of a full-fledged LMS. Jan will guide the discussion of how to select an implement an LMS including relevant information from her clients’ experiences.
