The Big Boom!...Or Is It?: Baby Boomers' Next
Moves and How to Plan for Them
Laurie Lemieux
Experts and publications are predicting a mass exodus of Baby Boomers from the workforce in the next ten years
that will drain away knowledge, experience, wisdom and history from organizations. As a result, many
organizations are already planning for how to fill the looming void.
But are they making a mistake? Economic indicators don’t support the trend toward a Baby Boomer exodus,
and neither do Boomers themselves. Boomers are working longer and want to give back.
Organizations have the opportunity to tap into the pride and loyalty of Boomers by acknowledging their
contributions and providing a way for them to share their wisdom.
In this session, we will:
- Review economic trends and generational values to predict Boomers’ moves in the next ten years
- Consider the impact of keeping Boomers in the workforce longer
- Introduce alternative transitions beyond traditional succession planning
- Explore the role of training and organizational development in the transfer critical knowledge and wisdom
- Discuss the implications for training and organizational development professionals of continuing to develop Baby Boomers
We’ll also explore important opportunities in training and OD for professionals to increase the effectiveness of developing Boomers and transferring critical a knowledge:
- Differences in training environment needs between generations
- Implications of generational values on training design and experiences
- Opportunities for experiential learning methods
The Big Boom? If it isn’t handled well, it could be. But with successful strategic and transition planning it doesn’t have to be!
