Intended Audience
All four sessions are geared towards those new in the workplace learning field or for those who need an overview of these topics.
Overview
Fundamentals of Training is offered cooperatively by ASTD-Cascadia Chapter and Portland State University (PSU) Continuing Education Department (along with the Graduate School of Education). Each session is 3 hours in length and is facilitated by a highly skilled instructor for that specific session. You must register for all 4 sessions.
Participants may receive 1 hour elective credit from PSU if they elect to pay a small additional fee, take all 4 sessions, and complete a required project. The lead instructor designed for this course will work with any students who take the course for credit. If you are planning on taking the series for credit, please read the information on credit registration at the lower right side of this page.
Outcomes
Needs Assessment (first morning,
8:30 am - Noon)
- Introduce participants to the Training Needs Assessment (TNA) process
- Outline the importance of the TNA in developing training interventions to improve organization performance.
- Participants will engage in activities to share their knowledge in order to understand typical resistance to the needs process and to gain insights on various TNA data collection methods.
Course Design (first afternoon,

- Instructional design models
- Learning objectives
- How to sequence material
- Instructional design issues related to distance learning delivery methods
- Course evaluation principles
- Four levels of training evaluation
Training Methodologies (second morning,
1 - 4:30 pm)
- Explore the when, why and how of 14 key training methods
- Use Dale's Cone of Experience to increase learning retention
- Utilize a variety of creative approaches to maximize learning
- Match training methods to learning objectives
- Kolb's experiential learning cycle
- Apply advanced facilitation skills (experiential learning) to make learning more engaging
Presentation Skills (second afternoon,
1 - 4:30 pm)
- Assess personal presentation style
- Identify techniques that improve presentation skills
- Working with visuals to increase your effectiveness
- Value of the "change up" approach
- How to elicit participation / interaction
- Effectively handling Q&A

CPLPs earn one recertification point/credit for each physical hour of continuing education within one’s current role/job or involving a new experience or content. You will need to keep records of the event and prepare any paperwork required by National ASTD. CPLP Website.

Special Notes
Class size limited to 25.
Credit
To obtain the one hour of credit, you must register for and attend all four sessions and then add $75 to that cost. The course number for credit for ASTD chapter members is TBA and for others is TBA.
To receive credit, you must attend the entire two days and be prepared to do a paper as determined by the lead instructor. Students taking the course for graduate credit must take the course for a letter grade and must achieve at least a "B" grade in order to the credit to be transferable into the graduate program.
This course can be used as an elective in the PSU PACE program.
Cancellation Policy
To receive a refund, a written request (email) before the early bird date (listed above) must be received in the Chapter office.
Refunds not available after the program starts. Refunds for those electing the credit option cannot be given after the program starts.
