A Message from the Chief Learning Officer
Click here to listen to Julie discuss the new concepts she outlines below.
Wow...the next two years are going to be exciting for the Cascadia Chapter! I want to share our new Program direction for 2007 and 2008. My new board role as Chief Learning Officer was created to look strategically across all of our program areas,
- Programs
- Series & Forums
- Outreach
- Geographic Interest Groups (GIGs)
- Special Interest Groups (SIGs)
- Conference
and determine where we can leverage learning more effectively, reinforce skills across different programs, and work collaboratively to build the knowledge and skills of our Chapter members. Get ready for some GREAT learning and programs over the next two years is all I can say!!!
The delivery vehicle by which we plan to roll out our integrated programs over the next 18-24 months is the National ASTD Competency Model which was developed and tested in 2005. This competency model is what Learning Professionals worldwide are holding themselves accountable to – and the Cascadia Chapter of ASTD is committed to building our members' skills in these areas and offering innovative and challenging learning opportunities in each area of the model.

We’ll start at the bottom of the pyramid and work our way up – here’s our plan:

| NOTE: Skill areas will be focused on and delivered quarterly...so expect to see complementary programs across all programmatic areas during that quarter's delivery period. |
Imagine, for example, a world-class author and speaker like John Whitmore coming to Portland and delivering a 1-day program on Coaching for Performance. The Competency or "Area of Expertise" of Coaching is slated to be covered in Q3 of 2007. So throughout that quarter, you might be able to learn more about the competency of Coaching by:
- Attending the Program in Portland.
- The Senior Forum (Series and Forums) might talk about Executive Coaching.
- Outreach might host a discussion about Coaching Elderly Workers.
- The eLearning SIG might discuss examples of effective online learning solutions that teach softer skills like Coaching.
- The Bend GIG might do a book study of Whitmore’s GROW Coaching Model.
These are examples only…but we’re hoping to really dig into each subject area and competency, and provide multiple opportunities to build and broaden our members' skill sets in each of the competency areas.
All of this kicks off March 6-7 at the 3rd Annual ASTD Regional Conference - Beyond the Edge...Maximizing your Competitive Advantage. Each and every session and keynote address will start building on those competencies in the ASTD National Competency Model. You won't want to miss it - it's an incredible value for the investment and you don't have to travel very far to build your own skills and professional network!
Sound exciting????? It is for us! Watch our web site for a more complete and rolling list of upcoming programs across ALL the program areas. And, if you’d like to help in coordinating programs, have a great idea for a program that supports the competency model, or would like to get involved in building or teaching programs that support the competency model….drop me a line…I’d LOVE to talk!
Happy New Year!
