ASTD-Cascadia Chapter is pleased to launch the first annual Impact Awards for Excellence in Workplace Learning. With the award, the Chapter’s goals are to recognize local organizations and individuals who advance learning and performance in the workplace and to showcase exemplary practices that deliver results.
Applications can be filed by organizations and consultants. The applicant categories are explained in the application form which is provided on this web site. Entrants may download the application and submit it per the instructions provided. A $30 fee is required for each application. The fee covers costs of administration, judging, and awards.
Applications and supplemental materials are due by October 3, 2005.

Why should companies and consultants apply for the award?

Eligibility

All practices must be projects / programs that were completed within the last 18 months.
- Applicants are not required to be members of ASTD
(either national or local chapter).

Process for Applying
- Complete both parts of the application and return to the ASTD
office by October 3, 2005.
- Please note: Part 1 includes company information whereas Part 2 does not include the organizations name in order to provide for blind judging. Please read instructions on both parts of the applications carefully.
- The preferred method for submitting applications is via e-mail directly to the ASTD office at
astd@astdcascadia.org
with "Impact Awards Application" in the subject line. The ASTD office will send you back a confirmation to let you know your completed application has been received.
- If you are using a check to cover the application fee, please
mail it to the ASTD office with a note indicating it is for the
Impact Awards application submitted via email. Again, we will provide a confirmation that both items have been received.

Judging Process
Applications will be evaluated by a panel of senior academic, corporate and government training and development professionals. The following criteria will be used in evaluating the applications.
- Relationship of the program/project to organizational goals. Those applications that show a clear connection to the strategic goals of the organization will receive more credit than those where the relationship is less demonstrable.
- Scope. Efforts that have a more wide spread affect will be given greater credit than those with a more limited focus.
- Learning principles. The extent to which learning principles were applied will be considered in awarding credit.
- Creativity. Illustrations of creativity will be considered in awarding credit.
- Measurable results. The Kirkpatrick rating approach will be used with the results described below ordered from lowest to highest in credit given.
-Participant ratings. When ratings were used, the level of participant satisfaction will be considered.
-Learning. Measures of trainee learning will be considered if they were taken. The way in which learning was evaluated should be provided in the application.
-Behavior change. Measures of the trainee’s change in behavior will be considered when provided. The way in which the change was evaluated should be provided in the application.
-Concrete results. Concrete results such as cost savings will be considered when provided. The application should indicate what results were achieved and how they were measured.

What Happens After I Apply?
- You will receive an initial e-mail confirming receipt of your application. If for some reason your application is not complete,
a representative of the Awards Committee will contact you to request additional information.
- Please take this opportunity to register to attend the ASTD-Cascadia
Chapter Regional Conference on November 17-18. The winners will be announced at the November 17th
reception and a panel discussion held with the winners on the 18th. All companies that apply will be acknowledged at this event. Click

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply if my company is outside of the Portland Metro area?
Yes! ASTD-Cascadia Chapter represents all of Oregon and SW Washington. Entries are open to applicants within this same geographic area.
Do I need to be an ASTD-Cascadia Chapter member or
a member of the National ASTD organization in order to apply?
No, you do not. Applications are welcome from all companies from within Oregon and
SW Washington.
How many copies of my completed application should I submit?
Since all applications should be sent via e-mail, you do not need to worry about submitting additional copies. If you have any problems in submitting via e-mail, please contact Kathleen Bergquist, the ASTD Business Manager, at

Should I submit a whole binder as a sample of the course materials?
No. In the application process it is requested that you submit only samples of materials from your course. It is highly recommended that you do indeed include screen captures and other visual samples of the project / course. The samples provided need to stay within the maximum pages for the application process (See Part 2 of Application
for specifics).
Must I enter a "category" for the project?
Yes, please do. This information is mainly collected for demographic information, however, it is important and we ask you to check the single most appropriate category for your application or to enter
"other" with a category of your own. Descriptions of the categories are below:
Career Development
Examples: alignment of individual career plans and organizational career-management processes for optimal performance, professional development practices for training and human resources development staff.
Learning Technologies
Examples: computer-based learning, Internet/intranet applications, performance support systems, intelligent tutoring systems.
Managing Change
Examples: culture change, organizational reengineering efforts, organizational development.
Organizational Learning
Examples: strategies and systems for organizational learning, learning as an explicit business strategy, team or group learning, knowledge management, best practice transfer.
Performance Improvement
Examples: a shift from training to performance improvement, human performance consulting, continuous improvement processes. Note: For entries in this category, typically a cause analysis has been conducted, and multiple interventions, not only training, address the causes identified.
Technical Training
Examples: training/performance support of a process or systems launch.
Training Management
Examples: partnerships, consortia, global training alignment, outsourcing management, administration, use or creation of skills standards or competency models, systems for monitoring and reporting data on the learning function.
Valuing Differences
Examples: leveraging diversity for enhanced performance, programs or effort to address issues around intercultural, gender, or sexual orientation.
Workplace Learning and Development
Examples: executive/management development, basic skills, school-to-work, use of skill standards, rapid development and deployment of interventions.
Who are the judges?
Experienced members of ASTD representing a cross section of Oregon
and SW Washington organizations and consultants.
Will my application be shared with anyone other than the judges?
No. As per the confidentiality statement on the application: The details of your application will remain in strict confidence and will only be shared by the judging panel for the Impact Awards. However, ASTD will publicly recognize the winning organization on its Website and at local events. Nothing from your application will be published or shared outside of the judging panel without your prior consent to ensure factual accuracy.
I’m a consultant and I want to submit a project that I did for XYZ corporation last year. Do I need to include them on the application?
No, however you must have permission from your hiring organization to use your example for submission. Be aware of and sensitive to the question of intellectual capital. All submissions must follow standard copy write practices.
