Mobile Learning
By Christine Martell | September 6, 2007
During the month of August I participated in the 31days to a better blog challenge. One of the best things that has happened as a result, is connection with a community of educational bloggers from around the world. In this post I’d like to share links from the blog of Sue Waters, who is incredibly passionate about mobile devices, m-learning and mobile learning.
I had been introduced to the idea of mobile learning at a program the PSU student group had on mobile applications for learning with Dave Richards of Fourth Star. Dave is presenting a program on m-learning for the e-learning SIG on Monday September 10.
After seeing what Dave and Sue had to say, I have started to pay a lot more attention to how we might consider utilizing the mobile devices we carry around with us. I thought of it as iPods and maybe PDA’s , but it’s a lot more. Sue has recently been writing a whole series of very interesting posts.
For those who want to be able to read blogs on a mobile device:

For those who want an idea of what their material might look like on a mobile:

For those ready to explore how we might use these devices in training:

Sure seems like there are some opportunities here. What devices do you have? What have you heard for ideas about ways people are using mobile learning?

Hi Christine
Thanks for writing this post and linking to all my posts on mobile learning. I hope your readers enjoy my posts. I have not forgotten your questions about mobile devices and have been researching the information.
I wish I was as good as setting out my posts as you. This month I need to work through my blog and make it easier to locate posts.

Really, I think any device smaller than a palmtop could fit in this category. I’ve used a bunch of different models, from daily text messages with prefab useful training content, to IM’ing from a phone to a known expert.
Perhaps the one I use most is the Google text message interface. Just text a query to GOOGL, and you’ll get responses with the results. Talk about an electronic performance support tool!
A newer flavor is Google 411, , which is free and voice based. Again, an EPSS tool that you have with you wherever you have a phone…
Pretty amazing stuff, and already built and ready for use…

Hi Christine,
Thanks for the plug on the m-learning session. Let me briefly recap the night for those who weren’t able to attend. The topics of discussion included:
1. M-learning devices, applications, systems
2. M-learning in action:
- The use of m-learning to leverage an existing investment in training.
- How m-learning can solve specific business objectives.
- Exploring how to use m-learning to train a mobile workforce.
- M-learning’s ability to provide instant training support.
3. Demonstration of current mobile devices.
For the demo portion, I invited some consultants from Apple to introduce the iPhone and to discuss how Apple uses m-learning. Apple’s core training program is built on m-learning techniques. For example, on their first day of work, Apple employees receive an iPod with all of the training they need to perform their job.
One other cool mobile invention the Apple consultants spoke about was 3D projection glasses that plug into mobile devices and project a 50 inch virtual monitor.
I would be happy to send my presentation to those who are interested.

Hi Dave,
I was out of town, and would have loved to have been there. Especially now that I know you were playing with iPhones and projection glasses. Wow.
Love to get your presentation, and of course, would like to hear more about mobile learning or anything else you’d like to share with us on BlogCascadia
