Where Does One Begin in Training?

    By Shari Ward | August 22, 2007

If you are like a lot of us, you sort of “fell” into the training field. You are a subject-matter expert who likes to talk to people and has a knack for explaining things. Voila! You are a trainer! That’s how I got into the field many, many moons ago. (Yup, I began training when I was in kindergarten - that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.) ;-)
If I’ve touched a nerve, read on. You may be where I was at the beginning of my training career - unsure of the resources available to me, of the questions to ask, of what I didn’t know. Well, you have found your way to the right place - your local ASTD chapter! It took me years of struggling on my own to open my eyes and seek assistance and resources from the community of training professionals that is always here, waiting to help. I was down in the Los Angeles area, but location doesn’t really matter. ASTD has chapters everywhere. In fact, when my husband and I decided to relocate to beautiful Oregon, it was the Cascadia chapter that led me to my first job here.

So, have you attended an ASTD Special Interest Group (SIG) meeting recently? Ever? The meetings are a fantastic vehicle for connecting with other training professionals who share an interest in a specific topic, such as e-Learning, or who are in similar professional situations, such as looking for a position. In my humble opinion, nothing is as valuable to your career as sincere relationships built through networking. From them you get new ideas, fresh perspectives, and great enjoyment - all of which can only enhance your professional and personal lives.

So, invest some time in yourself and come on out to a meeting - the ASTD Cascadia Programs page has all the information. I look forward to seeing you there!

Thank you so much for the encouragement, Tom! I must admit that it feels great to share with and hear from my colleagues in training. This stuff is awesome!!
