Finding Jobs for contractors and employees

    By Christine Martell | July 17, 2007

Here is a post on the Will at Work Learning blog about two companies that specialize in finding work for workplace learning professionals.

Do you have to rely on your personal network alone? Can the big job boards help? Do our trade organizations’ job board’s have enough focus on contractors? Is there any way to know what people and organizations are good? Recently, I’ve come across two organizations that may help, Learning Gurus and Clarity Consultants.

The Portland recruiting market seems to operate more like an overgrown organic hometown. Although the services offered by the companies mentioned in the article are provided on a limited basis by the Cascadia chapter, most of the local recruitment efforts appear to be conducted on a “word of mouth”, “who do you know basis”. Naturally, the confidence level is higher when dealing with a known, or at least recommended, candidate.

The companies mentioned may flourish in their markets (Silicone Valley and San Diego), but I suspect that here in Stumptown social and business networking will remain the rule.

If the technology is embraced, things may go the way of the electronic social networking discussed in the blog linked on the right side of this page “Social Networks and Recruiting”, especially as the “MySpace” generation moves into the workforce.

      Ron,
I agree with you, if you want to work in Portland, networking is key. I know this may seem crazy…but there are some people who actually want to leave Portland! For those who do, I would also remind you that national ASTD also has a job board. You do have to be a member of the national organization to access it. You can find more information at http://www.astd.org

All the social networking talk reminds me that I should be intentional about what I post online, since someone who is hiring me may some day read it. I sure would rather have thought about something a potential employer reads about me. Good thing my life is pretty boring and predictable these days.
